Understanding the DACA Application & Renewal Steps
Whether you apply for DACA for the first time or renew it, the application is extensive. Additionally, be prepared for a sizable filing fee of $495, which includes the employment authorization and biometrics fees.
When you apply for or renew DACA, you will need to include the following information:
- Basic information (name, current address, gender, Social Security number, passport, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, country of residence/citizenship, etc.)
- Removal proceedings information (if applicable)
- Alien registration number (if applicable)
- Ethnicity and race
- Physical characteristics (height, weight, eye color, hair color)
- All addresses you’ve had since coming to the United States
- Departures/absences from the United States since arriving
- Information about border crossings and travel without advance parole
- Criminal, national security, and public safety information
- Your statement, certification, signature, and contact information (and that of your interpreter or preparer, if you had one)
If you are applying for DACA for the first time, you will also need to include:
- Verification that you arrived and began living in the U.S. before you turned 16 (i.e. a statement and any evidence, such as school records)
- The date when you entered the U.S. for the first time (or an approximate date, if you aren’t sure)
- The location of your initial entry (or an approximate location, if you aren’t sure)
- Education information (school, location, last attendance date, and, if applicable, graduation date)
- Military service information (if applicable)

Is DACA Right for You?
“Deferred action” refers to an agency’s decision to delay, suspend, or put off a removal proceeding, which is why you must take great care to renew your status every two years. This DACA relief is based on prosecutorial discretion, which is why DACA status is more tenuous than permanent residence or citizenship.
Unfortunately, DACA does not currently offer a path to a green card and citizenship. However, it can allow you to stay with your family members in the United States, obtain work authorization to support yourself and your loved ones, and take more time to find a different form of relief.
You may be qualified for DACA if you meet the following requirements:
- On June 15, 2012, you were under 31 years of age
- You first arrived in the U.S. before you turned 16
- You have lived continuously in the U.S. since June 15, 2007
- On June 15, 2012, you were physically present in the U.S.
- When you apply for DACA, you are physically present in the U.S.
- You have not been convicted of certain crimes
- You are either in school, have graduated from high school, have obtained a GED, or have been honorably discharged from the Coast Guard or Armed Forces
